       Hotel Pemaquid History

While we do not boast an ocean view, we are located 150 yards from the rugged Pemaquid coast and lighthouse. Pemaquid has a pine-treed sandy beach located near the old fort and restoration area (the site of three of the most ancient forts in the country). We are a 45 minute drive from Boothbay Harbor's shops and one hour from Camden's scenic harbor. There are a variety of restaurants in the area (one next to the lighthouse serving breakfast, lunch and dinner). New Harbor (5 mins. by car) offers dine-in-the-ruff seafood restaurants and daily boat excursions to Monhegan Island. The Hotel (converted from a farmhouse) was opened to guests on July 4, 1888 and you are welcome to browse through our complete set of Guest Registers.  hotel-small.jpg (36090 bytes)
chlivrm-smaller.jpg (31953 bytes) Guests usually arrived by steam boat in the middle of May and stayed for the entire season... would you believe for $1.50 to $2.00 per day, including 3 meals! Things certainly have changed. The main source of entertainment, however, has not changed... our guests still spend many an hour high on the rocks captivated by an always changing surf, rocking on our large wrap-around porch or walking through the tall pines along the rugged coast. We began restoring the Hotel in the spring of 1985 and it has become a labor of love... hate... love!! Seventeen years ago, we saw a movie called "Somewhere in Time"... and thought 'wouldn't it be great to find a big old place... and turn it into a step back in time'. Some people get goosebumps when they walk into our lobby, with the old music, old memorabilia, antiques and odd pieces of furniture and collectibles... many they'd only seen in a magazine or movie.
We love old things, and take great pleasure in salvaging them. Few can walk through the lobby without being drawn into a comfortable old chair... come early, if you want the two seats in front of the fireplace! All our rooms have private baths, with the exception of four rooms on the second floor of the Hotel that share two baths. The Hotel offers a large stone-fireplaced livingroom/lobby, separate library room, enclosed sun porch (coffee served on this porch daily between 7-10:00 a.m.). If you are planning a 'first' trip to the Pemaquid area, we can guarantee... it won't be your last! Come take a step back with us... somewhere in time. Smaller-Lighthouse.jpg (26309 bytes)
